And we would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Thomas Bodenheimer for delivering the conference’s keynote speech, “Aspiring toward the Nuka System of Care.” Dr. Bodenheimer brought the benefit of his many years of expertise in primary care to the presentation, offering attendees insight into the extensive research he has performed with the aim of improving health care in the United States.
Dr. Bodenheimer’s presentation covered many different aspects of his research and the conclusions he has drawn from it, including the ten building blocks of high-performing primary care, how to optimize continuity of care in the era of “part-time syndrome,” how primary teams can share care, and health coaching with the goal of creating a collaborative partnership between patients and their care team. He also discussed what patients want from physicians, different structures of care teams, and how to improve access to care. Although the goal of the conference was to teach attendees about the Nuka System of Care, we were also able to learn from Dr. Bodenheimer, and we greatly appreciated the opportunity to hear from him.

As discussed in a previous blog entry, attendees also learned from SCF leadership on a variety of topics including integrated care delivery, workforce development, using data for improvement, leadership principles, strategic planning, and behavioral health. Pictures of the conference are available on our website here, and if you are interested in learning about the Nuka System of Care from the people who practice its principles every day, see here for available training opportunities!
